Managing Service Queues in Promed MRS

This section explains how to create, monitor, and manage service queues for patients.
Example patient: Thomas Huddersfield, currently in Male Medical Ward (Bed MM-01).

1. Understanding Service Queues

  • A queue represents a workflow for a specific service or location (e.g., Male Ward, Lab, Consultation).
  • It tracks patient status such as Waiting, In Service, or Completed.
  • Queues help staff monitor patient flow and manage workloads efficiently.

2. Accessing Queues

  1. Navigate to Service Queues → Admin:
    https://promedmrs.yoctobe.com/openmrs/spa/home/service-queues/admin
  2. You will see a list of active queues, each tied to a location or service.

3. Adding a Patient to a Queue

  1. Select the relevant queue for the service/location (e.g., Male Ward – Observation).
  2. Click Add Patient to Queue.
  3. Select Thomas Huddersfield from the patient list.
  4. Set the initial status: Not Urgent, Urgent, Emergency.
  5. Save to add the patient.

4. Updating Patient Status in a Queue

  1. Open the queue where the patient is listed.
  2. Select the patient entry.
  3. Update the status as the patient moves through the workflow:
    • Waiting → In Service → Completed
  4. Save changes. The queue view updates in real time.

5. Removing a Patient from a Queue

  1. Select the patient in the queue.
  2. Click Remove or Mark as Completed depending on the workflow.
  3. Confirm the action. The patient leaves the active queue but is still recorded in their visit history.

6. Tips for Managing Queues

  • Use queues to monitor patient flow and identify bottlenecks.
  • Each location/service can have its own queue.
  • Always update the patient’s queue status to reflect real-time care delivery.
  • Queues can be filtered by status, location, or provider for easier management.

Example Workflow

  • Thomas Huddersfield is admitted to the Male Ward.
  • He is added to the Male Ward – Observation queue with status Waiting.
  • Once the nurse starts assessments, his status is updated to In Service.
  • After completing vitals, labs, and medication, the status is updated to Completed, and he is removed from the queue.
  • This allows staff to track the patient journey in real time and manage workload efficiently.
